Anglesey Column
How many times have you visited Anglesey and not been aware of this landmark The Anglesey Column with The Marquess of Anglesey perched on top? I've asked many people who have visited Anglesey, some many times, and they have a blank look on their face when I mentioned it. If you travel along the east side, perhaps on the A55 on the way to Holyhead, it is quite easy to miss although it can be seen from both the Menai and Britannia bridges as well as across the straight in Bangor. It's been there since 1815! After crossing either bridge and travel along the A5 towards the railway station with the lonest name, you will soon see it.
The Marquess Of Anglesey
The column was erected in honour of Henry Paget 2nd Earl of Uxbridge who fought in the battle of Waterloo and was second in command to the Duke of Wellington. He lost a leg as a result of a cannon ball coming into contact with it. The statue was an afterthought that was added decades later, around 1860. A cottage was built nearby to house a caretaker. This was recently extended and is now a visitor centre.
Drone Photos
I couldn't resist sending the drone up to get a closer look and to see what he sees every day.

Station With The Longest Name |
The railway station with the longest name can be seen from the viewing platform as shown in the above photo. Follow the railway line next to the electricity pylons and you will see a bridge over the railway. that is the station with the longest name. This is a very popular attraction with coach loads of tourists from many countries visiting the station and the nearby shop. I'm not even going to print the name - Its far too long.
Visit The Anglesey Column
Volunteers have spent a lot of time and effort to restore this landmark. Visitors can climb the 115 steps inside the column to a viewing platform and take in the breath taking scenery of the Welsh countryside including the Menai Straight, Snowdonia and the Menai and Britannia bridges. If you are planning a trip to Anglesey, the column is well worth a visit and your support would be much appreciated by those who have put in much effort in it's restoration. Visit their website which has a lot of historic information about the construction and recent renovation of the column.
