How It Looked - New Brighton Tower
Amazingly, New Brighton on the Wirral Peninsular once had a tower that was taller than Blackpool Tower. It stood 576 foot high and provided spectacular views of Merseyside, North Wales and beyond for those who ascended up the lift to the viewing platform. The tower opened around 1900 and was an instant tourist attraction for New Brighton. Sadly, the upkeep was too much for the owners which resulted in the tower being dismantled around 1921 and the metal sold for scrap. What a shame it was short lived as it would have been an iconic landmark today rivalling Blackpool Tower.
Tower BallroomAlthough the tower had gone, at it's base was the Tower Ballroom which was a very popular venue for decades, right up until the late 1960s before it was completely destroyed by fire.
This Historic England photo from 1920 shows the New Brighton Tower with the top already dismantled. The ballroom at its base remained as a popular venue until the late 1960s. There are more fascinating photos on the 'Britain From Above' website.
The Beatles At The Tower BallroomIts well known that the Beatles played the majority of their gigs at the Cavern Club across the Mersey in Matthew Street, but second to this was the Tower Ballroom where they played on at least 27 occasions from 1961 before they hit the big time. Other well known bands including the Rolling Stones also played at the venue. It has been suggested that a statue of sorts similar to that of the Fab Four at the Pier Head Liverpool be erected at Tower Ground, site of the Tower Ballroom.
Tower Ground. Site of the Tower and Ballroom. Just think! The Beatles played on this spot many times
Could we see a statue of the Beatles here?Drone At The Tower GroundWhat was it like going up the tower and taking in the views that it offered from the viewing platform? With it being over 100 years since it was dismantled, it is now out of living memory, but we can re create the trip up the lift to the top by means of the DroneSnoop drone. The drone was sent up on the exact spot where the tower stood, so lets have a look at the pictures it sent back. Imagine you are there at the top of the New Brighton Tower in 1900, or if the tower was still there today, The drone's high resolution camera captures what we would have seen. |
